Mike Kachedwa |
Mike Kachedwa is a visiting scholar who comes to MSU’s Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences (CEHLS) from the National Research Council of Malawi. He is one of three second-year trainees to join us as part of a four-year research and bioethics training program, "International Training for Scholarship in Research Ethics," funded by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health. This program represents a partnership between CEHLS at Michigan State University and the University of Malawi College of Medicine. As a visiting scholar and trainee, Mike is engaged in various relevant activities including attending MSU research ethics classes and sitting as a shadow reviewer on the University's Institutional Review Board.
Mike earned a B.A. in Social Science from Chancellor College, University of Malawi. As the Principal Scientific Officer responsible for health research coordination at the National Research Council of Malawi, his key responsibilities include screening health research protocols for science and ethics; health research monitoring and evaluation; initiating the formulation, development, implementation and review of research policies, regulations, measures, procedures and guidelines in health research in Malawi. He is currently sitting, on behalf of the Council, on the National Health Sciences Research Committee and College of Medicine Research and Ethics Committee, the only two government-designated research ethics committees in Malawi. The Council is a central government body responsible for research oversight in Malawi with sectoral and institutional linkages nationally and internationally.
Research Interests:
As a Health Research Coordinator and member of the two ethical review committees
in Malawi, Mike’s interests include policy research in issues that will
translate into the formulation and development of ethically responsive research
policies and regulations. His passion for teaching and training drives his
interests in developing innovative ways to promote bioethics research in his
country.
