30. Dr. Jones has received 2 grants from a pharmaceutical company to conduct research. The company now offers him a speaker’s bureau arrangement whereby he will receive $3000-$5000 for each lecture arranged for him by the company. Publicity for the lectures will stress that he is an “expert from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.” The company will supply him with a PowerPoint presentation.

.Fri, 3/16/07 11:38 AMon if he can review the powerpoint and have input into it
.Sun, 3/18/07 6:39 PMOn whether he agrees with the material in the power point presentation and if he is allowed to make changes as he sees fit.
.Mon, 3/19/07 12:24 AMIf he agrees with the content of the presentation or not.
.Mon, 3/19/07 5:38 PMDepends on the content.
.Mon, 3/19/07 8:56 PMVery Serious COI. Same problem but more aggregious since in this case he is acting as a company spokesman. Full disclosure of his tie to the company is cirtical. One would hope that the power point slides would also include the company logo indicating where this information originates.
.Mon, 4/23/07 1:22 PMSame as above, plus he/she needs to review the slides for fairness and bias. The material presented must be the facts as known and Dr. Jones' personal interpretation of the facts.
.Tue, 4/24/07 10:02 PMNo, if he reports his potential conflicts of interest when he lectures and he is able to edit the powerpoint presentation to what can be appropriately without significant bias.
.Wed, 4/25/07 1:35 PMIf the PowerPoint reflects accurately what Dr. Jones discovered in his research, there is no COI. On the other hand, if the company provides its version of the research, there is a very serious COI
.Wed, 4/25/07 7:31 PMNo COI if Dr Jones clarifies his relationship with the company and the fact that the presentation is not his.
.Fri, 4/27/07 5:54 PMAs long as the money is expected to compensate the doctor for time only, I see no COI if the information provided by the company is evidence-based and unbiased.
.Tue, 5/8/07 12:08 AMNeeds to be disclosed that he is on the Speaker's Bureau. This is now what is required by the Pharmaceutical Monitors/government standards.
