34. One department in the College of Human Medicine signs a contract with a pharmaceutical company. The company will provide $3M/year for 3 years in research support to the department. In exchange, the company will name 2 representatives to a 5-member advisory board that will decide upon research priorities in the department. The company will also have a right to patent any discoveries that arise from any research done in the department during the 3-year contract.

4.Mon, 3/19/07 8:56 PMThis sounds like a serious intrusion into academic freedom. The company should keep these types of activities in house and the faculty and chairperson should summarily turn the offer down.
